9 Vietnam Travel Hacks for First-Timers (2025 Guide)

4/7/2025 | 9:05:49 AM
If you’ve already bought your ticket to Vietnam but haven’t done any proper planning — don’t panic! These 9 travel hacks could be just what you need to stay out of trouble and make the most of your adventure.

1. Apply for your visa in advance
Before flying to Vietnam, make sure you understand the visa requirements for your nationality. Some countries are eligible for visa exemptions or e-visas, while others may require applying at an embassy. Applying for a visa online or through an official platform ahead of time can save you from stressful situations at immigration. Don’t wait until the last minute — some applications take a few days to process.

You can apply for a visa yourself using the official form from the Immigration Department, or request the service through a company or travel agency.

2. Use local ride-hailing apps like Grab
Traditional taxis in Vietnam can sometimes overcharge tourists, especially if the meter is "broken." Avoid the hassle by using local apps like Grab, Bee or Xanh SM. These apps work just like Uber and let you book rides with fixed prices. Among them, Grab is the most popular. Foreigners may find it difficult to use Bee or Xanh SM. You can even order food or package deliveries through them. Motorbike taxis (xe ôm) are a cheap and fun way to zip through traffic, especially in busy cities like Ho Chi Minh or Hanoi.

3. Don’t miss out on street food
Vietnam is world-famous for its vibrant street food culture. From a bowl of soup phở in the morning to a crunchy bánh mì sandwich or a savory plate of bún chả, the choices are endless — and delicious! Street food is not only affordable but also a way to experience daily Vietnamese life. Just remember to eat where the locals eat — a busy stall is usually a safe and tasty bet. Cleanliness matters, so go for places with fast turnover and good hygiene.

4. Always carry some cash with you
While credit cards are becoming more common in big cities and hotels, Vietnam is still mainly a cash-based society. You can transfer via QR code or cash, but most will not be able to pay by card. Small vendors, street stalls, local buses, and markets may not accept cards at all. Make sure to withdraw enough cash (Vietnamese dong) and keep small denominations for daily expenses. ATMs are available in cities but may charge international withdrawal fees, so plan ahead.

5. Prepare for heat and humidity
Vietnam's climate varies by region, but generally, it’s hot and humid, especially from April to September. Pack lightweight, breathable clothing made from cotton or linen. Don’t forget sunblock, sunglasses, hat, umbrella and mosquito repellent! These will be lifesavers during your stay. And always stay hydrated; bottled water is available almost everywhere.

6. Don’t be shy about bargaining
In local markets and small shops, bargaining is not only acceptable — it’s expected. If you don’t negotiate, you might end up paying double the regular price. Smile, be polite, and negotiate with a sense of humor. It’s part of the cultural experience and can even be fun!

7. Learn a few basic Vietnamese phrases
You don’t need to be fluent, but knowing just a few simple words can go a long way. “Xin chào” means hello, and “Cảm ơn” means thank you. Locals appreciate the effort, and it often leads to warmer interactions, friendlier service, and maybe even a few smiles or laughs. Try also “Bao nhiêu tiền?” (How much?) or “Không cay” (Not spicy) if you're sensitive to heat.

Many Vietnamese people do not know foreign languages, so be prepared with translation apps (google translate) when talking to them.

8. Explore by motorbike
Motorbikes are everywhere in Vietnam — it’s the most popular mode of transport. Renting a motorbike is an adventurous and flexible way to explore cities, mountains, rice fields, or coastal roads. Just make sure you have the correct license (an international one is best), and always wear a helmet. If you don't have a motorbike license, hire a driver to take you. Traffic can be chaotic, so ride carefully. In rural areas and islands like Phu Quoc or Cat Ba, it’s often the best way to get around.

9. Respect local customs and traditions
Vietnam has a rich cultural heritage, and showing respect for local traditions will be greatly appreciated. Some basic etiquette rules: remove your shoes before entering homes or temples, dress modestly when visiting religious sites, and avoid public displays of affection. Also, always greet older people respectfully — age is honored in Vietnamese society.

These practical tips will help you feel more confident and comfortable during your trip to Vietnam. With just a bit of preparation and local know-how, your journey can be smoother, safer, and full of unforgettable moments. Enjoy your trip! 🇻🇳
